The marine area around the Malgrats islands (Calvia, Mallorca) and close by waters off the coast, have a high ecological value also for fishing because of its diversity of habitats, benthic communities and local fish. The meadows of seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) occupy large areas. We also find circa-littoral and infra-littoral rocky bottoms, which provide a habitat for large sedentary fish.
The marine reserve is located from Punta na Foradada and Cap Negret all around the islands of Malgrat with 2km in length and cliffs over 60 m high and Conills (also called Ses Rates or d’Enmig) with less than 0.5 km in length and 30 m high. The islands are located in the municipality of Calvia, in front of the bay of Santa Ponsa. Also interesting to know is that the islands itself have been declared as a special protected area for birds as various big birds choose the island for nesting. They provide good shelter and feeding grounds.
